Why should I obey?

In a world that celebrates absolute freedom, the concepts of submission and obedience sound restrictive and outdated. Modern culture teaches us to question authority, act independently, and avoid anything that feels rigid. Yet, when it comes to our spiritual lives, true freedom works differently. Following God's Word does not restrain us; it protects and liberates us.


Scripture reveals that neutrality is an illusion. In John 8:31–34, Jesus addresses those who claim they have never been slaves to anyone, stating clearly: "Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin." We are either servants of God or servants of sin. The enemy often uses subtle, rational lies to downplay small compromises, much like his deception in Genesis 3:1–5 when he convinced Eve that disobedience would bring no consequences. Every major downfall—whether in health, marriage, or integrity—starts with a small act of compromise. Yielding to God’s truth keeps us anchored before small missteps turn into destructive strongholds.


Submission is not a sign of weakness; it is a fruit of spiritual maturity and humility. Jesus set the foundation for servant leadership in Mark 10:43–45: "Whoever would be great among you must be your servant... For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve." Pride leads to division in workplaces, communities, and church ministries. True humility enables us to forgive, keep silent to avoid unnecessary conflict, and put collective unity above personal ego. This spirit of obedience and unity is uniquely visible in the tradition of the Catholic Church, where leaders are called to value humility and faithfulness over personal ambition. Maturity is measured not by how many Bible verses we memorize, but by how well we practice them.


Living an obedient life is rarely popular, and walking the narrow path carries a personal cost. Jesus warned in Matthew 7:13–14 that the gate to destruction is wide, while the way to life is hard and narrow. Carrying our cross can feel isolating. When we refuse to participate in workplace gossip, corrupt shortcuts, or ungodly compromise, others may view us as rigid or boring. Yet, Jesus urges us in Matthew 10:16 to be "wise as serpents and innocent as doves" as we navigate a complex world. A life of significant spiritual impact requires standing firm, even when it feels lonely. There is no resurrection without the cross, and no glory without sacrifice.


When we stop compromising on the small things, God opens doors that human effort cannot unlock. Obeying His Word brings divine wisdom, clarity, and unexpected breakthroughs into our daily lives.
